The British had 63 men killed and 337 wounded and missing while Washington had about 970 men killed, wounded or missing, and 1,079 taken captive. Also, George had lost almost one quarter of his troop.
On August 27, The Americans wasted no time blaming who had won the Battle of Long Island. His troop stood there cool, calm, and relaxed while waiting for British to arrive. The Americans were having a tough time trying to keep their food and gun powder dry because of the horrible wind and rain. On August 28, 9,000 more men came to help the Americans.
Washington had discovered that he put himself in a sticky situation because he had sent some parts of his troops to
Manhattan and Long Island, with the Hudson River, the East River, and Long Island Sound open to British warships and transport. William Howe's brother, Admiral Howe had gone to New Jersey and cut off part of Washington's troops. But, not so fast Admiral could not go because of the terrible rain and winds.
Wind had continued to rain hard the next day on August 29. Washington had wanted to withdraw because he couldn't do any more. But, he had changed his mind because of the dark, foggy weather. His troop sat there quit.
When the British charged in the morning, they founded empty trenches. Washington's army lived to fight another great day.
